Peninsula Valdés – Orcas hunting

Witness the Spectacle of Orcas' "Intentional Stranding" Technique

Introduction

Peninsula Valdés, nestled on the Atlantic coast, is a wildlife sanctuary of unparalleled importance, owing its reputation to the diverse marine mammals that call these waters home. But it’s the killer whales, the ocean’s apex predators, that steal the spotlight here, showcasing a hunting technique that leaves spectators in awe – “intentional stranding.”

Since 1976, Cape Punta Norte has been the stage for an extraordinary natural drama. Two male orcas initiated a tradition, teaching their entire community the art of capturing sea lion pups directly from the beach, a skill now passed down through generations.

From March to mid-May, the shoreline comes alive with small nurseries of sea lion pups playing in the shallow waves. These young swimmers are oblivious to the impending danger and just learning to swim. It’s the iconic dorsal fin of the orca that pierces the water’s surface, scanning the shallows with echolocation, revealing a vivid underwater tableau. With precision, the orca discerns between adults and juveniles among its prey.

With odds stacked against the killer whales, capturing adult sea lions proves a formidable challenge, with a success rate below 20%. Instead, orcas wisely focus their energy on the pups, where success rates soar above 50%. It’s a calculated strategy born of experience, ensuring efficiency in their hunt.

Remarkably, after securing a calf, orcas pass on this formidable hunting strategy to their young. This phenomenon is not just an act of survival; it’s a glimpse into the intricate life of these oceanic giants. We invite you to join us on this expedition, where we seek the perfect moment to witness and capture one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles – the killer whales of Peninsula Valdés and their breathtaking “intentional stranding” technique.
